I won't lie. I laughed hard and for a long time when I first saw this. Shit, I laughed the first 20 times I saw this. Hell, I still laugh when I watch this. But...there is an element of sadness in it because while we all laugh at the poor kid's severe post-dentist mega-high, we (most people) hesitate to empathize with his situation. Being super high to the point of delusion and paranoia is scary for any adult but what must it feel like for a kid who doesn't even understand the notion of an altered-state of mind? You can hear the genuine fright in expressions like "I can't see anything", "is this going to be forever", "why is this happening to me?" and let's not forget the primitive scream of anger mixed with fear. All that said, it's good that these drugs can allow a child (or adult) a painless surgery and I'm sure he'll look back later and enjoy this forgotten memory. Hopefully this video won't haunt him throughout his teens and also lead him down a path of experimentation. It wouldn't surprise me if this kid was trying heavy mind expanding drugs in 10 years largely in part due to this video becoming such a large part of his life. Or maybe i'm just trippin

I fuckin love this. I'm sure there is a negative and angry vantage point to this from animal activists who see cruelty in everything that somehow involves a human and an animal and the animal does something that exhibits their abilities - the shame!!

Will European physicists destroy the world?

Will the world come to an end on September 10? That fear is motivating two lawsuits—one American, another European—that aim to stop the physicists at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) from switching on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) on that day. The LHC is a $10 billion 17-mile long particle accelerator lying in a circular tunnel beneath the border of France and Switzerland. Its massive superconducting magnets cooled with liquid helium accelerate two beams of protons and lead nuclei to nearly the speed of light. These particle beams will eventually be crashed into each other to produce temperatures and particles not seen since microseconds after the Big Bang ago.

One of the chief goals of the LHC experiments is to find the elusive Higgs Boson, the only fundamental particle predicted by the Standard Model of particle physics that has not been directly observed. The Higgs boson plays a key role in explaining the origins of mass in other elementary particles. Exciting, if esoteric research, to be sure, but why oppose it?

Walter Wagner, a former nuclear safety officer, and Spanish science writer Luis Sancho, have filed a civil suit in federal district court in Hawaii asking for a temporary restraining order to stop the researchers at CERN from switching on the LHC until further safety analyses are completed. In Europe, Professor Otto Rössler, a chemist at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen in Germany filed a similar suit with the European Court of Human Rights.

These LHC opponents fear that the Earth could be destroyed by vacuum bubbles, magnetic monopoles, microscopic black holes, or strangelets produced by the high-energy proton-proton collisions planned by CERN physicists. Vacuum bubbles have been described as a kind of "cosmic cancer." If it turns out that there is a lower energy state into which the universe could settle, then the LHC might produce "bubbles" of such a state which would then expand, ripping apart the Earth and eventually the entire universe. If magnetic monopoles were produced they might induce protons to decay and thus destroy normal matter. Microscopic black holes might grow by gobbling up the Earth. And strangelets are combinations of quarks that theoretically interact with normal matter and transform it into strange matter.

At the Global Catastrophic Risks conference at Oxford University this past July, CERN's Michelangelo Mangano described the findings of a report released in June by the LHC Safety Assessment Group (LSAG). The bottom line: "There is no basis for any conceivable threat from the LHC."

While the LHC safety report goes through a number of scenarios, its chief point is that the energies produced in the LHC are "far below those of the highest-energy cosmic-ray collisions that are observed regularly on Earth." In fact, cosmic rays produced by phenomena in the universe "conduct" more than 10 million LHC-like experiments per second. If such energies actually produced vacuum bubbles, microscopic black holes, magnetic monopoles, or strangelets that could destroy planets and stars, physicists wouldn't be here to perform experiments in the LHC now.

At the Global Catastrophic Risk conference, Future of Humanity Institute research associate Toby Ord asked an interesting question: How certain should we be about safety when there could be a risk to the survival of the human species? As Ord argued, "When an expert provides a calculation of the probability of an outcome, they are really providing the probability of the outcome occurring, given that their argument is watertight. However, their argument may fail for a number of reasons such as a flaw in the underlying theory, a flaw in their modeling of the problem, or a mistake in their calculations."

In other words, for the argument that the LHC poses no existential risk to humanity to be sound, the theory underlying it must be adequate. But physical theories have been upended in the past. Ord pointed out that Lord Kelvin had calculated the age of the sun. Using the best physics of his time, Lord Kelvin concluded that the sun was 100 million years old. It was not until the discovery of radioactivity that the current estimate of 4.6 billion years could be calculated. So Ord argued that it's not unreasonable to think that there is a 1-in-1,000 chance that the theories underlying the LHC are flawed in some important details.

In addition, the model of the problem itself could be flawed. As an example of how flawed models can impact the real world, Ord cited the Castle Bravo 15-megaton thermonuclear bomb test in 1954, the explosive yield of which was two and half times what had been calculated by the bomb's designers at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Those experts had missed the fact that the lithium-7 isotope, when bombarded by high energy neutrons, decomposes into tritium and boosts neutron production. As a more recent example, Ord claimed that Lloyds of London's insurance models for New Orleans had failed to consider the risk that the city's levees might fail.

And finally, it's possible that errors in calculation could slip into errors of analysis. Ord cited the frequency of miscalculations in medication dosages as an example of such errors. To get an estimate of argument failure, Ord cited survey evidence which found that 1-in-1,000 to 1-in-100 articles are retracted from high-impact scientific journals. For an article to be retracted something must be found to be seriously wrong with it. "If the probability estimate given by an argument is dwarfed by the chance that the argument itself is flawed, then the estimate is suspect," argued Ord. He suggested that multiplying the probabilities that the theory, model, and/or calculations on which the operation of the LHC rests are wrong dramatically increases the probability estimates that switching it on will destroy the world. Thus Ord concluded that the LHC should not be switched on.

Mangano from CERN objected furiously to Ord's presentation, arguing, "I can apply that estimate of a 1-in-1,000 chance to everything." Ord responded that his analysis should only apply to experiments that pose an existential risk to humanity, not to experiments whose outcomes can be ameliorated later. I asked Ord if he could think of another experiment or situation to which he would apply his analysis. He looked surprised for a moment and then reluctantly said, "No." Over canapés after Ord's talk, several of his colleagues expressed glee at the prospect that a philosopher's arguments might derail a $10 billion physics experiment. Personally, I estimate the probability of that happening at less than 1-in-1,000.

As intriguing as Ord's argument is, I am ultimately unpersuaded by it. Why? Largely because the empirical evidence is that the universe has been running trillions of these high-energy physics "experiments" for billions of years without disastrous results. In fact, Ord's colleagues Nick Bostrom and Max Tegmark from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology calculate that the empirical evidence suggests a conservative estimate of the annual risk that LHC-like experiments would destroy the earth is 1-in-a-trillion. At the end of his talk, Mangano reminded the Oxford conferees, "Jeopardizing the future of scientific research would be a global catastrophe." Any theory, model, or calculation that suggests otherwise is clearly flawed.

I don't know much about skateboarding and I know even less about how to actually do it. What I do know is that this video, shot at 120fps (frames per second), is really cool. I never really understood the dynamics and physics of what made the board elevate and spin in the air the way it does until I saw this. This one came out of nowhere and definitely caught our attention quick! It's a four minute trailer for a documentary on Talib Kweli. In those four minutes there are a number of cameos from artists speaking on Kweli and his influence. Some of the faces we see in the trailer are ?uestlove, Kanye West, Mos Def, Dave Chappelle, De La Soul, Common, Jean Grae, Pharrell, Dame Dash and many more. The project is ongoing and was started in 1999. I have been told the editing is near complete. We'll be sure to let you know as soon as we get more details on this. Shout out Video Rahim, the films director and editor, for sending this one over.

This is a good blog. The guy is a dispatcher for a cab company and some of his stories are hilarious.
Here is an example of one I found particularly enjoyable.

GUY: No I don't need a cab, I left a green backpack in one of your cabs Saturday night, and they said to call today and ask for lost and found.
ME: Sure, hold on a sec.

I transfer him. A few minutes later. . .

ME: Blank Top, your phone number please?
GUY: I'm the guy who left the bag in one of your taxis last Friday, but don't transfer me to lost and found again, nobody is picking up the phone there, so I want to talk to you, okay?
ME: Okay.
GUY: Now is there any way to find out if anybody turned in a bag?
ME: I wouldn't know, you'd need to talk to lost and found.
GUY: Why is nobody answering the phone there?
ME: Seeing as how it's after five they've probably gone home. Just leave a message and they'll get back to you, or call tomorrow during regular business hours.
GUY: Shit . . . Let me ask you something: if a driver finds a bag, will they open it and look in it? Or will your lost and found people open it?
ME: I guess, maybe. Maybe to see if there's anything in it that they can use to figure out who the bag belongs to, like a business card or something.
GUY: So they always do that?
ME: I don't know.
GUY: Okay, I need to leave STRICT instructions that if anybody turns in a green backpack with black trim, under no circumstances should it be opened, okay?
ME: . . . I wouldn't even know how or where to place a request like that.
GUY: I'm serious, if anybody opens this bag I will take it as an invasion of privacy and I'll sue.
ME: Look, I have no idea how I would even pass that along, alright? You can leave a message at lost and found if you want but . . .
GUY: (interrupting) I am letting YOU know RIGHT NOW that ANY SEARCH of that bag will be ILLEGAL, DO YOU UNDERSTAND?!
ME: . . . Face it buddy, they're gone.
GUY: WHAT'S GONE?!
ME: Your drugs. Let them go man. They're gone.
GUY: WHO SAID ANYTHING ABOUT DRUGS?!
ME: Well I'm GUESSING drugs based on your wild paranoia about anybody opening the bag, and your talk of "illegal searches", not to mention your irrational anger, but I guess it could be lots of things; drugs, guns, pictures of naked twelve year olds. . . to be honest I can't WAIT to find out what it is!
GUY: YOU PEOPLE HAVE NO RIGHT TO GO LOOKING THROUGH OTHER PEOPLE'S PRIVATE PROPERTY!!!
ME: Hey, we're just trying to reunite bag with owner. You're the one who left a bag full drugs, guns, and pictures of naked twelve year olds in his taxi. Shoot, a fella could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.

ME: I don't suppose you'd give me your name and address to make the cop's job easier would you?

So this weekend the 215 played in Whistler BC on top of Blackcomb mountain. One week prior I had gone to Vegas to catch them performing at the Hard Rock. Due to some unfortunate extreme donky'ness I wound up missing the first 45 minutes of the show. It is something I will never forgive myself for. Anyway, 7 days later I had the opportunity to redeem myself and made sure to be ready for the start of this show. I always enjoy the creative ways that they start and this one was perhaps one of the best I've seen so far.

Just got back from Vegas where I had the privilege of seeing the legendary Roots crew for the 12th time in my history. Although I donked it and missed 45 minutes of the show (I don't wanna talk about it) it was everything I had hoped for and more. Great sound, great venue, good crowd. Luckily, since they will be in Whistler this Saturday, i will have a chance to redeem myself and see those coveted first 45 minutes. They generally have fantastic openings so I will be careful to catch it this time around.

Hello everyone.

Well the Ball state softball team continued to play this weekend.... and, they were hoping to continue off of their straight 3 out of 4 losses…. and so we will take a look and see how that happened… they started off good but then eventually but the ball state women’s b' women’s team was shot down [yikes. That sounds bad] and ended up doing poorly...oh no.

and t' d'. ok. we're gonna continue on now. The ladies cardinals will play an Iowa tournament starting this Friday. Before the ball state baseball team kicks off its conference season this we'r, this weekend. The cards will battle in' instate rival indiana tomorrow. tomorrow’s game will be the ........meeting between the two....beating both....(quietly) first.....*sigh* [followed be 11 second pause]. Hoosiers are on the four on. on the year. and they have won 6 of it's last 7 games tomorrow…. will be the game....3… at 3pm.

which..switching to ballstate mens tennis, it seems last....*short sigh*.....wee, player on, it seems every week they have a player [pause, looks to someone behind the camera and mouths the words "I'm so sad" or "I'm so sorry".....*sigh*...pause…..if you are not sympathetic yet you are probably a robot. Matt Lawrence is the latest Cardinal’s tennis player to win the award. Lamar won all this...all the singles and doubles matches last week [note* his name is now Lamar and he WON THE DOUBLES!!!!!. Good job Lamar/Matt]. So far the cardinals have had a player honored on the on the weekly awards…. 7 out of the 9….ah 7 out of the 9 weeks…. the cards will play at Boise state invite this weekend.

The 4 other players joining Bo-got on the AP team are senior forward Wayne Summers and Kansas, of Kansas, and Hakim Warrick of syrcause. junior guard JJ reddick of duke and sophomore ..and sophomore guard chris paul of wake forrest rebounded out ….the list.
